He has travelled the World following in the footsteps of Canada’s soldiers\, from Sicily to France\, to Spain\, Hong Kong\, Japan and Korea. SUMMARY:Jack Lewis Plaque Dedication
DESCRIPTION: When: Sunday\, September 30th\nTime: 1PM – 2PM\nWhere: 140 Christina Street North (Old Taylors Building)\nWhat: Plaque dedication for fallen Constable Jack Lewis. \nCost: Free to the Public.  Everyone invite! \nThe Sarnia Historical Society has invited the entire Lewis family to attend a special plaque dedication that is 82 years in the making.  We will be unveiling the plaque in the front of 140 Christina Street South.  This is the location that Jack Lewis was fatally wounded 82 years ago.  \nREFRESHMENTS AFTERWARDS at The Sarnia Legion.    \nBackstory: \nWe hope you are familiar with the notorious story of Red Ryan.  We have covered it extensively on our website here or you can watch a movie that was filmed in Sarnia.  \nThroughout that story\, the unsung hero who helped end Red Ryan’s criminal escapades was a Sarnia Police officer who died while protecting the citizens of Sarnia from a robbery taking place in downtown Sarnia.  Jack Lewis died Victoria Day weekend in 1936 by the gun of Red Ryan.  \nLewis left behind a wife and two young children.       \nLast year we put together a video montage to tell the story of Jack Lewis which garnered a lot of interest.  While researching our up-coming history book about The Sarnia Police Service\, titled “Keeping the Peace: Policing the Imperial City” we discovered documents pertaining to a $1\,000 reward for information or capture of Ryan that was never collected.  This bounty was issued by our Provincial Attorney General’s Office.  Eighty-two years later\, the value of reward has appreciated to $18\,000.     \nThe Sarnia Historical Society wanted to do something special for the Lewis family and erect a plaque in downtown Sarnia at the site that Lewis was gunned down.  We wrote a letter to the Office of the Attorney General of Ontario a few months ago requesting they issue us the outstanding $1\,000 reward from 82 years prior. Our intensions with this reward money has always been to commemorate Jack Lewis and his sacrifice for our citizens.\nIn the links below is the letter that was sent to the AG\, the response we received as well as the subsequent press release to all media. \nLetter to Attorney General\nResponse from Attorney General\nPress Release to Media about Rejection \nOur local media did a fantastic job telling our story here\, here\, here\, here\, hereand here.  \nMany proud Sarnians wanted to help us continue telling this story.  They reached out\, and within 24 hours of the media blitz described above\, the money needed for this project ($4\,500) was raised\, all by donors who wished to remain anonymous. To those donors (you know who you are)\, on behalf of the citizens of Sarnia\, we thank you.

SUMMARY:November Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Sarnia Historical Society is hosting author Bruce Kemp to talk about his new book: “Weather Bomb 1913: Life and Death on the Great Lakes” \nWhen: Tuesday\, November 28th\, 7PM\nWhere: Sarnia Legion (upstairs) 286 Front St N\, Sarnia\, ON N7T 5S7 (MAP HERE)\nAdmission: Free to the public.  Refreshments provided\nContact: Call Ron RealeSmith @ 519-328-5009 or email info@sarniahistoricalsociety.com \nBook Information Link: Click here \n \nBook Intro:\n\nIn the dark hours of November 9\, 1913\, death screamed across the Great Lakes in the guise of a rare\, white hurricane. The Storm brutalized the region for most of the following week leaving in its wake cities crippled by devastating snowfalls\, paralyzed communications\, mysteries that remain unsolved to this day and the corpses of 256 men and women from twelve of the largest ships on the fresh water seas.\n \nTaking its storyline from interviews with the few remaining survivors – like the Stratford senior who skipped school to help collect bodies off the beach\, the woman who tried to chop the Storm in two with an axe and the little girl who hid all day under the kitchen table waiting for word of her captain father – Bruce Kemp collected up as many living memories of the event as possible then fleshed them out with period media reports making Weather Bomb 1913 an accurate recounting of the causes and costs of the Storm.\n \nBut Kemp didn’t leave it at that. He went to incredible lengths to write this book\, (which took 40 years from start to finish). Along with material garnered from archives\, museums and libraries\, he interviewed ship captains who know the Lakes intimately and were part of many of the stories that give the book a gritty authenticity. Kemp also worked with meteorologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to present and interpret brand new computer modeling of the Storm they’ve branded “the worst natural disaster ever to hit central North America…”\n \nLargely forgotten today\, the Storm of 1913 was an important event in the history of the Great Lakes. It should be part of the fabric of the regional and national cultural fabric.\n \nBruce Kemp is an internationally known writer and photographer and has covered everything from fine dining in Europe to the America’s Cup and voyages through the fabled Northwest Passage. Previous books include: The Complete Travel Writer\, the Ports Cruising Guide To Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair\, updates to the Ports Cruising Guide to the Rideau Canal and the novel Letters From A Fugitive’s Son. \nBruce Kemp Bio\n \nAn Award-winning journalist and photojournalist\, Bruce Kemp has been an involved boating writer or more than 35 years covering both the power and sail sides of the story. Since the 1980s he has travelled the world sending stories home about everything from Canada’s America’s Cup effort to how to carve a Haida canoe. His work is seen in Boat Guide Canada\, Boating Business and Ports Guides. It appears in international publications like Sailing World\, Cruising World and Wooden Boat as well. His career has stretched to include: a textbook for travel writers\, “The Complete Travel Writer”; a novel about fugitive slaves in Canada and their fight in the American Civil War to end slavery\, “Letters From A Fugitive’s Son” (Little White Publishing); and his just-released book of Great Lakes maritime history\, “Weather Bomb 1913 – Life and Death on the Great Lakes”. He has been honored with the Caribbean Photographer of the Year Award\, numerous national\, provincial and regional awards for both writing and photography.

SUMMARY:October 10th Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Topic:  To Print or Not to Print a Historical Book: All Signs Point to Print! \nAs the history of the St. Clair Catholic District School Board is being researched (and eventually turned into a printed publication) the question is\, “Why is the printed format of a historical publication on everyone’s mind these days?” I’m not certain I have the answers to all these questions\, but I have some pretty good ideas! \nWhat is it about our documentary heritage that piques the interest of young and old alike? Old photos\, aged documents\, and stories from the past have found a place on bookshelves once again. In fact\, the printed book seems to have a far greater appeal now than in recent years—or so I see it. So what makes a great local history publication? What is the viewing appeal in reviving historical documents and photos in a glossy print format? Are readers simply caught up in a form of nostalgia handling a printed book while looking at historical material? \nSpeakers Bio: \nDeb Majer is a London-based archivist who shares her time between being the Diocesan Archivist for the Roman Catholic Diocese of London and operating Majer Historical Solutions (MHS). MHS is a historical consulting business dealing with historical records management\, research\, estate archives\, archival programming\, and publishing.
