New Website Full of Sarnia History Stories
The Sarnia Historical Society has unveiled a brand new website for those interested in Sarnia’s past.
According to Society president Ron Reale Smith, the content-rich website is the result of six months of work by the group’s board of directors. Smith, along with vice president Laura Greaves, and secretary/ treasurer Phil Egan, took over the almost defunct organization last March.
The website, www.sarniahistoricalsociety.com, currently holds over 200 stories covering Sarnia’s history in multiple categories, with plenty more to come.. Visitors can browse by Key Word or simply search the Index for stories of interest.
A 40-page Sarnia Then & Now history special section is being delivered to 30,000 Sarnia homes Wednesday and Thursday in the August 27 issue of The Sarnia Journal, a joint project of the paper and the Society. It is designed to let Sarnians know that the website is up and running and to give readers a taste of the city’s historic past. Twenty-four previously unpublished stories are highlighted in the special feature.
“We’re inviting the people of Sarnia to add their own pieces of history to the website,” Smith said. “It’s designed to be a resource for the whole community. We hope that people will share their brushes with history with all of us, and sign up for our newsletter to learn even more.”
In congratulating the Historical Society on the launch of the new website, Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said, “The Historical Society has created a renaissance in our history by telling the human story of sacrifice, strength, courage, faith and determination of Sarnians who worked to build a better life. As the next 100 years unfold, may we remember our proud past and history through this website and dream no small dreams for Sarnia.”
